With Halloween now an afterthought, the holidays will be upon us before we know it. This time of year we seem to increase our intake instead of expenditure, and most of the time regret it come January or later yet, spring when the warm weather returns and we look to getting back into our warm weather clothing. Seems like those attic or closet gremlins appear over the winter annually to switch our clothing sizes to one smaller.
To prevent these holiday gremlins from coming back again this year, our Run.Walk. Live. nutrition guru Cindy Murphy, RD, has offered some tips to follow to ensure your expenditure surpasses your intake;
Happy Fall!
The colors of fall are so amazing and the cooler temperatures are a blessing for sure. However, along with this beautiful season comes the holidays. We now have baskets full of candy from Halloween and we are coming up on Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner. Not to mention the days are shorter and will get progressively colder which will make one suddenly feel like a bear and want to hibernate. So, I thought I might make a few suggestions on how to get through this challenging time of year without overeating.
- Find a good workout CD that you can do at home so you don’t have to leave the house if you don’t want to.
- If you are planning on attending a party or holiday event, don’t go hungry. Eat a small meal an hour before you go so you’re not starving when you get there.
- Abstain from alcohol. Alcohol packs on the pounds because your body views it as a toxin and metabolizes it first while storing everything else as fat. Alcohol consumption will also impair your ability to make good decisions about what and how much to eat. Alcohol reduced your inhibitions, gets the gastric juices flowing and increases your appetite. Not a good combination. However, if you do want to have a drink, have it with your meal.
- Exercise first thing in the morning followed by a high protein breakfast. Avoiding carbohydrates will decrease the release of insulin which reduces the fluctuations of blood glucose and reduces feelings of hunger.
- Drink hot, caffeine free herbal tea. Keeping your core body temperature high will reduce your appetite.
- If you want a dessert have it and feel good about it. Your mind is a VERY powerful tool. You release hormones good or bad depending on how you feel about what you are doing. Eat your dessert and enjoy every bite, savoring the sweetness in every morsel. Then forget about it.
- Most of all focus on the beautiful you. Complement yourself everyday several times if needed. You are beautiful inside and out.
Have a beautiful Holiday season!
